David Terry Fine is a non-fiction filmmaker and commercial director known for crafting visually inventive, emotionally driven stories that live at the intersection of empathy and access. The son of a concert organist, his creative instincts were shaped early through music—moving from piano to drums before ultimately finding his passion for film in the rhythms of editing. He began his career driving around Los Angeles picking up a variety of chicken sandwiches for Jerry Bruckheimer and other people who never learned his name.
Fine’s work spans an eclectic range of collaborators, from Radiolab and MoMA to musical artists Son Lux and Robyn, reflecting a practice rooted in experimentation and cross-disciplinary storytelling. His immersive short CAN YOU READ MY LIPS?—a sensory exploration of communication and perception—earned multiple awards and was later acquired by National Geographic.
His longform directing work includes HIT IT HARD, an ESPN 30 for 30 chronicling the rise and unraveling of golfer John Daly; OPERATION FLAGRANT FOUL, part of Netflix’s UNTOLD series, examining the scandal surrounding NBA referee Tim Donaghy; and DIRTY POP, a three-part Netflix series exploring the rise and fall of Lou Pearlman, the controversial impresario behind The Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC.
Across formats, Fine is drawn to complex characters and high-stakes worlds, balancing cinematic style with an approach rooted in human connection.
